Black Friday

In modern times, Black Friday is the name given to the shopping day in the US that follows the Thanksgiving holiday. On this day, retailers offer discounts to incentivise frenzied buying activity. Black Friday also refers to the US market crash of September 24th 1869, when a huge sale of gold by the US government to prevent an attempt by private individuals to corner the market caused not just a crash in the gold price but, in the ensuing panic, the stock market too.
