Carbon Budget

A carbon budget is an estimate of the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions that can be released into the atmosphere while maintaining a specified probability of limiting global temperature increase to a certain level, such as the 1.5°C target outlined in the Paris Agreement. Carbon budgets are influenced by a range of factors including historical emissions, level of industrialisation, and the Earth's capacity to absorb carbon dioxide. They provide a framework for understanding the urgency and scale of emissions reductions needed in order to mitigate climate change.
