Ecosystem Restoration

Ecosystem restoration is the process of assisting in the recovery of degraded, damaged, or destroyed ecosystems in order to re-establish their structure, function, and self-sustaining capacity, as well as to enhance the provision of ecosystem services and the conservation of biodiversity. Ecosystem restoration can involve active interventions, such as reforestation, revegetation, or soil rehabilitation, or passive approaches, such as natural regeneration, assisted migration, or the removal of pressures and disturbances. Ecosystem restoration is increasingly recognised as a critical strategy for climate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development, as reflected in initiatives such as the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030).
