Enterprise value
Enterprise value (EV) is considered a more complete valuation of a company than market capitalisation so is invariably used to value companies in takeover situations. Market cap is the value of a company’s shares multiplied by the number of shares outstanding. EV adds a company’s short and long-term debt and subtracts cash and cash equivalents sitting on its balance sheet.
