Ethical investing can be considered part of the broad base of principles-based investing that has been a driving force of certain investment styles for a considerable length of time. As the focus on environmental, social and governance investing has caught globally on as a theme in recent years, it has moved centre stage. Ethical investing is used (incorrectly?) interchangeably with terms such as responsible investing, ESG investing or impact investing.
