Gross Margin

A company’s gross margin is its net sales revenue (i.e. total sales revenue less returns and discounts) minus the cost of goods sold (i.e. direct production costs). The gross margin, which is also referred to as the gross profit, is calculated before operating expenses and interest expense. The gross profit margin can also be expressed as a percentage, in which case it is the actual currency amount divided by the net sales amount.
