HMRC, Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, is the UK’s tax, payments and customs authority. While HM Treasury leads on strategic tax policy and policy development. HMRC is responsible for policy maintenance and implementation. HMRC safeguards the flow of money to the Treasury through its collection, compliance and enforcement activities. It facilitates international trade, protects the UK’s fiscal, economic, social and physical security before and at the border, and collects UK trade statistics. HMRC has five strategic objectives: 1 collect the right tax and pay out the right financial support; 2 make it easy to get tax right and hard to bend or break the rules; 3 maintain taxpayers’ consent through fair treatment and protect society from harm; 4 make HMRC a great place to work; and 5 support wider government economic aims through a resilient, agile tax administration system.
