Hydrocarbon

Hydrocarbons are fossil fuels that have been used as energy sources to power the world economy since the industrial revolution but which are now giving way to renewable sources because of their CO2 footprints. Coal, crude oil, shale oil, tar sands and natural gas are hydrocarbons.
