Industry, group of productive enterprises or organizations that produce or supply goods, services, or sources of income. In economics, industries are generally classified as primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary; secondary industries are further classified as heavy and light. In finance and investment, companies are divided into industry classifications according to their primary activities. This facilitates comparisons by investors (companies in the same industry grouping will typically share similar challenges and opportunities) and by index compilers.
