Junior Equity

A company’s common shares can be referred to as junior in the context of preference shares or preferred stock, whose holders stand ahead of junior equity holders in the queue to receive dividends and in liquidation. Because it sits at the bottom of the repayment hierarchy, common equity offers the prospect of higher returns. An additional compensation is voting rights attach to common shares.
