Real Income

Real Income

Real income is income adjusted for inflation. If a worker’s salary stays constant over five years but inflation over that period is 2%, the worker will experience an effective pay cut, as the impact of inflation will have reduced the worker’s purchasing power: £100k of purchasing power in Year 0 will be reduced to roughly £90.75k over five years with annual inflation at 2% over that period.
