Total Return

Total return is a key investment performance metric. It calculates in percentage terms the actual return generated by an investment or an investment portfolio over a given period of time. Total return adds up the value of all of the distributions made by holdings in the portfolio (interest and dividends), adds the net capital appreciation and then calculates how much additional value was created relative to the cost of the investments.
