Unearned income, as the term suggests, is income an individual gains from sources other than employment. It refers to income from interest payments on savings or investments, dividend income, insurance payouts, pension income, lottery wins, wins from gambling, monetary gifts, income from inheritance, welfare and government benefits including unemployment benefits, alimony or child support payments.
