VIX

The VIX index is traded on the Cboe or Chicago Board Options Exchange. It is an index of near-term volatility in the S&P 500. It is sometimes known as the ‘fear gauge’ as it provides an indication as to how volatile stocks are expected to be, something which tends to increase in times of stress.
