How can nature make you smarter?

Plants can make you smarter, without you even having to try. A study found that adding plants to the workplace improved problem-solving and innovation by an average of 15%. The more time we spend in nature, the greater the effects. Spending just one hour in nature has been shown to improve memory and attention span by 20%. A 10-year follow-up of 6,500 people aged 45–68 in the UK found that cognitive decline was 4.6% lower in participants living in greener neighbourhoods.

How can nature make you happier?

Spending time in nature has been found to boost our self-esteem and positive outlook. Exposure to greenery has been linked to a lower likelihood of developing schizophrenia in adulthood. Nature’s impacts on alleviating and preventing depression and anxiety are well-documented. 

A Zurich study found that urban parks allow youths from diverse backgrounds to meet on equal footing, or "common ground", increasing social integration.

Spending time in nature has been found to boost our self-esteem and positive outlook – internal resources that we frequently draw on, which help us to regulate our mindsets and perspectives, helping us to be more resilient, confident and happy.
