Notional Value

Notional Value

The notional value of a derivatives trade refers to the value on which the transaction is based. It is purely notional i.e. theoretical given that no cash changes hands when the transaction is initiated. But both counterparties need to agree on the notional size of the transaction for contractual purposes and in order to calculate the cash flows owing to either counterparty under the contract.
