Principal

In bond markets, principal is the bond’s face value and what the borrower is contracted to pay back to bondholders at maturity. In a trading context, principal trading is trading by a trader or broker on a proprietary basis i.e. for their own account and not on behalf of clients. In principal trading, position risk is borne by the trader not clients.
